From Librarian's Desk

Progressive Education Society’s Modern College of Arts, Science & Commerce (Autonomous) Library, Shivajinagar, Pune-5 has a long tradition since 1971 having a rich collection of 1,00,000+ print books, 80 print journals and magazines, and subscribed online databases with e-books and e-journals. Right from its inception, it has become the “heart of the campus”. The library occupies a prominent and integral part in the teaching and learning process of the institution.
The library aims to fulfil all kinds of educational, informational and recreational needs of the students, teachers, researchers and other users by providing them with a wide range of books, periodicals, reference books, famous literary works, rare books and audio-visual aids.
The Modern College Library is a combination of traditional print resources as well as e-resources, providing the services accordingly. Library has 8000+ student members and 400+ teaching and non-teaching staff as library members. The centre has a separate Digital section with 20 computers having Broadband Internet Connectivity which provides access to subscribed and open access databases like INFLIBNET's N-LIST, DELNET, NDL, NISCAIR's NOPR, DOAJ, and Jayakar Knowledge Resource Centre's free e-resources to teachers and students.
A separate facility of 10 computers is available in the Library for Visually Impaired Students through which the students can listen to audiobooks, syllabus etc. Software and devices like Angel Players are purchased by the College for facilitating these students with special needs. Sponsors like Bajaj Finance have donated devices, Braille books etc. and organize free training courses for visually impaired students. For Divyangjan (Persons with Disabilities), a separate Library Entrance is available so that they do not have to climb the stairs.
In order to curb plagiarism, the Centre also provides 'Drillbit' Plagiarism Detection Services to its staff and Ph.D. research scholars.
As an extension and social activity, the Library organizes programs on Birth Anniversaries and Days of National Importance, following the Government Resolutions as published annually by Government of Maharashtra.
Every year the library organizes various activities like Book Exhibition and Library Orientation. Such activities and events not only encourage reading habits in students but events like Book Fair make teachers and students aware of the latest publications in the universe of knowledge.
Institutional Repository, Digital Library, Library E-bulletin 'MODLIB', WebOPAC, Information literacy programmes, reprographic services, and reference services are some of the special services provided by the library.
The College Library plays the role of a counsellor to the students rather than a caretaker of the book collection and is actively engaged in technical services of acquisition, classification, cataloguing and lending books to the members.
